Kate Smith
Assistant Professor, Department of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology
A member of the Brown faculty since July 2008, Kate received a BS in Biology from The University of New Mexico and a PhD in Ecology, Evolution and Marine Biology from The University of California Santa Barbara. Before arriving at Brown, she was a David H. Smith Conservation Research Fellow with the EcoHealth Alliance. She is on the Executive Board of the International Association for Ecology and Health, founder of PetWatch, and review editor for the journal EcoHealth.

Victor Schmidt
Brown-MBL and Reverse Ecology IGERT PhD Student
Victor is a second year student in the Brown-MBL joint graduate program co-advised by Kate and Dr. Linda Amaral Zettler at the Marine Biological Lab (MBL). He is also a student in the Reverse Ecology IGERT program. Victor is studying the the dynamics of pathogen spread through the ornamental fish trade, the microbiome composition of sick and health fishes, and is interested in the benefits of probiotics to aquaculture.

Kim Cohen
NSF Graduate Research Fellow and Reverse Ecology IGERT PhD Student
Kim received a B.A. in biology from Colby College in 2009. She has since worked with Tom Kunz at Boston University to characterize little brown bat (Myotis lucifugus) major histocompatibility complex genes, which present antigenic peptides for recognition by the immune system. Kim will join the lab in fall 2013 as an NSF Graduate Research Fellow and Brown Reverse Ecology IGERT student. Kim is broadly interested in wildlife disease and we're eager to see where her interests take her!

Damon McIntire
Undergraduate Researcher
Damon is a junior at Brown concentrating in Biology and is part of the Program in Liberal Medical Education. He has a particular interest in infectious diseases and will be pursuing that area of study in medical school and beyond. As part of the lab group Damon will study reptile associated Salmonellosis in in the U.S. Damon has a deep love of the Spanish language and tutors Spanish speaking immigrants in Providence in his spare time. In fall 2013 he will study abroad in Spain.
